Sie ist waldreich, etwas schroff und von Wildbächen durchzogen. Der Park der Maremma wurde 1975 gegründet und ist in kurzer Zeit zu einem touristischen Magnet geworden. Der Park kann zu Fuß besichtigt werden. Die Maremma umfasst die Ebene , die sich im Süden rund um die Stadt erstreckt und in das Küstengebiet mit der Mündung des Flusses ausläuft. Die Küste in der Provinz Massa-Carrara ist besonders eindrucksvoll, weil das Gebirge fast bis ans Wasser zu ragen scheint. Diese Region hat aber landschaftlich noch mehr zu bieten: herrliche Strände und imposante Berge. Auch die angrenzende Region hat eine schöne grüne Küste und beliebteste Küstenort dieser Gegend ist das Städtchen Viareggio. Colonies of Hawks, Sparrow hawks and Short-toed eagles nest in Tuscany and it's easy to spot Roe-deer and deer. The Otter, a species that risks extinction and is rarely found in Italy, still lives in this protected habitat. Many of these churches date from the 13th century and decorated with frescos of the famous Sienese school during the 14th centuries. Castles and farmhouses belong to a medieval architectural tradition that figures among the most important in the Maremma. Traces of old military structures are still visible in the remains of citadels in Maremma Toscana, demonstrating the importance of these villages as defensive bastions.
